Tips for Healthy Hair

Keeping your hair healthy looking can be harder for some than others, so here’s a brief guide on how to keep your hair looking and feeling fantastic.

Brush Before Showering

Wet hair is more vulnerable to being broken than dry hair is, so it’s a good idea to brush before you shower. As such, untangling knots etc by brushing first can help keep your hair looking much healthier. Another reason to brush first is that it will help distribute your hair’s natural oils to the ends of your hair from your scalp, thus providing nourishment and protection.

Wash Enough, But Not Too Much

Pores in your scalp release a type of oil that coats the lining of your hair. These oils are beneficial because they nourish your hair, but too much oil can also be a problem.

Ideally, people with oily hair should wash once a day, unless their hair has become dirty from being outside or other reasons. If you don’t have oily hair then you may be able to wash less often, depending on your activities. Bear in mind the shampoo also helps nourish your hair, and conditions like dandruff can be a sign you’re not washing enough.

Concentrate on the Scalp

A healthy scalp is one of the key ingredients to healthy hair, so make sure not to neglect it. The scalp is also where your hair is at its most dense so it will take more work to wash each hair strand thoroughly.

Use your fingers to work your shampoo and conditioner well into the scalp and surrounding hair. But while a thoroughly cleansed scalp is essential for healthy hair, don’t forget to clean the ends also.

Use Quality Products

You should always try to use the best products you can afford for the best results. Using quality products will help ensure your scalp and hair is thoroughly cleansed and nourished, while they are also unlikely to cause any damage.

And remember that everybody is different so what might be the perfect shampoo for somebody else is not necessarily the right one for you. As such, it’s a good idea to try a few times and find the one that helps make your hair look healthiest.

Conditioner is effective at helping to repair damaged hair, strengthen it, and give it a healthy, shiny look overall.

Diet

Your hair is made from numerous nutrients, so eating a healthy diet will help give you healthy-looking hair. Plus, of course, a healthy diet will help you feel better overall and give you a longer life, so there’s no reason not to eat well regardless of how your hair looks.

Eating a healthy diet doesn’t necessarily mean sticking to vegetables and other healthy foods. Such a strict diet is usually unnecessary provided yours still provides the full range of nutrients you need. This mostly means eating a wide range of fresh foods, although the occasional burger or pizza is just fine.

Take Warm Showers

It can be tempting sometimes to jump under a hot shower to remove grime and dirt when coming in from outside. But this is not really a great idea as hot water can weaken your hair and irritate your scalp.

Instead, it’s best to shower with water that’s warm, but not hot. If you’re feeling brave enough, a final rinse with cold water will help close your hair follicles, helping keep them clean and clear. A cold water rinse can also help add some shine to your hair.

Protect

Your hair is exposed to the elements nearly every day, so it’s a good idea to keep it protected. This means protecting it from the rays of the sun and other harmful elements like pollutants.

Wearing a simple scarf over your hair when you’re outside will help keep it protected and in full health. Alternatively a parasol or similar will help protect your hair and scalp from the sun’s rays, while it will also help protect you against sunburn.

Use Silk Pillows

Pillows are made to be as comfortable as possible, but even the most comfortable of pillows may be causing damage to your hair. This is because cotton and other materials can cause friction that can potentially damage hair strands. The good news is that there’s a less harmful option instead.

Silk pillows and other bedding will cause much less friction, meaning your hair is less likely to be damaged. Not only that, but silk is also very comfortable to sleep on, potentially helping you get a better night’s sleep.

Get Regular Trims

Even the best-kept hair isn’t completely safe from damage, and the ends of strands are most exposed. As such, it’s a good idea to have regular trims to remove split ends and this doesn’t usually mean changing your style.

Summary

It’s not usually difficult to keep your hair healthy looking, but some people will struggle more than others. But remember that one of the key factors behind healthy hair is to wash and condition with quality products, and make sure to pay special attention to the scalp.

You can also wear scarves or similar to protect your hair from the elements, while even your bedding can help make the difference. Getting a regular trim will also help and give an opportunity for some expert advice.
